It is narrated from Ibn Shihab that Sa'id bin al-Musayyib and Abu Bakr bin 'Abd al-Rahman used to say: If a man makes an oath of abstinence (ila') from his wife, then when four months have passed, one divorce will take effect, but the husband has the option to take her back as long as she is in her waiting period ('iddah).
