بَابُ مَا جَاءَ فِي الصَّدَاقِ وَالْحِبَاءِChapter on what is reported regarding dowry and gifts
Hadith 1081

حَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى، عَنْ مَالِك، عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ ، عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ السَّاعِدِيِّ : أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، جَاءَتْهُ امْرَأَةٌ، فَقَالَتْ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، إِنِّي قَدْ وَهَبْتُ نَفْسِي لَكَ، فَقَامَتْ قِيَامًا طَوِيلًا، فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ، فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، زَوِّجْنِيهَا إِنْ لَمْ تَكُنْ لَكَ بِهَا حَاجَةٌ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " هَلْ عِنْدَكَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ تُصْدِقُهَا إِيَّاهُ ؟ " فَقَالَ : مَا عِنْدِي إِلَّا إِزَارِي هَذَا، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنْ أَعْطَيْتَهَا إِيَّاهُ، جَلَسْتَ لَا إِزَارَ لَكَ، فَالْتَمِسْ شَيْئًا "، فَقَالَ : مَا أَجِدُ شَيْئًا . قَالَ : " الْتَمِسْ وَلَوْ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ "، فَالْتَمَسَ، فَلَمْ يَجِدْ شَيْئًا، فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " هَلْ مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ شَيْءٌ ؟ " فَقَالَ : نَعَمْ، مَعِي سُورَةُ كَذَا، وَسُورَةُ كَذَا، لِسُوَرٍ سَمَّاهَا، فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " قَدْ أَنْكَحْتُكَهَا بِمَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ "
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa’d Sa’idi (may Allah be pleased with him) that a woman came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: “Indeed, I have gifted myself to you,” and she stood for a long time. Then a man stood up and said: “O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Marry her to me if you have no need of her.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Do you have anything to give her as a dowry?” The man replied: “I have nothing except this lower garment.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “If you give her your lower garment, you will be left without a lower garment. Look for something else.” He said: “I find nothing.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Look, even if it is an iron ring.” He searched but found nothing. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: “Do you know any portion of the Qur’an by heart?” He replied: “Yes, I know such and such surahs,” and he mentioned several surahs. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “I have married her to you for the portion of the Qur’an that you know by heart.”
