Hadith 1059

وَحَدَّثَنِي، عَنْ مَالِك، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ ، أَنَّ أَبَاهُ عُرْوَةَ بْنَ الزُّبَيْرِ " كَانَ يَعُقّ عَنْ وَالْإِنَاثِ بِشَاةٍ شَاةٍ " .
Hazrat Urwah bin Zubair used to offer one goat each as 'aqiqah for his children, whether boy or girl.
قَالَ مَالِك : الْأَمْرُ عِنْدَنَا فِي الْعَقِيقَةِ : أَنَّ مَنْ عَقَّ، بَنِيهِ الذُّكُورِ عَنْ وَلَدِهِ بِشَاةٍ، شَاةٍ الذُّكُورِ وَالْإِنَاثِ، وَلَيْسَتِ الْعَقِيقَةُ بِوَاجِبَةٍ، وَلَكِنَّهَا يُسْتَحَبُّ الْعَمَلُ بِهَا، وَهِيَ مِنَ الْأَمْرِ الَّذِي لَمْ يَزَلْ عَلَيْهِ النَّاسُ عِنْدَنَا، فَمَنْ عَقَّ عَنْ وَلَدِهِ، فَإِنَّمَا هِيَ بِمَنْزِلَةِ النُّسُكِ وَالضَّحَايَا، لَا يَجُوزُ فِيهَا عَوْرَاءُ، وَلَا عَجْفَاءُ، وَلَا مَكْسُورَةٌ، وَلَا مَرِيضَةٌ، وَلَا يُبَاعُ مِنْ لَحْمِهَا شَيْءٌ، وَلَا جِلْدُهَا، وَيُكْسَرُ عِظَامُهَا، وَيَأْكُلُ أَهْلُهَا مِنْ لَحْمِهَا، وَيَتَصَدَّقُونَ مِنْهَا، وَلَا يُمَسُّ الصَّبِيُّ بِشَيْءٍ مِنْ دَمِهَا
Imam Malik, may Allah have mercy on him, said: In our view, the ruling is that whether it is a boy or a girl, one goat should be given for each, and ‘aqiqah is not obligatory, it is recommended. However, the goat for ‘aqiqah should be like that of sacrifice: it should not be one-eyed, thin, with broken horns, or sick. It is not permissible to sell the meat or skin of the ‘aqiqah, and its bones should be broken. The one performing the ‘aqiqah should eat from its meat and feed the poor, and the blood of the ‘aqiqah goat should not be applied to the child.
