Description of the seven modes of recitation
Hadith 571
47- مالك عن ابن شهاب عن عروة بن الزبير عن عبد الرحمن بن عبد القاري قال: سمعت عمر بن الخطاب يقول: سمعت هشام بن حكيم يقرأ سورة الفرقان على غير ما أقرؤها عليه، وكان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم أقرأنيها، فكدت أن أعجل عليه، ثم أمهلته حتى انصرف، ثم لببته بردائه فجئت به رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فقلت: يا رسول الله، إني سمعت هذا يقرأ سورة الفرقان على غير ما أقرأتنيها. فقال له رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: ”اقرأ“ فقرأ القراءة التى سمعته يقرأ. فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: ”هكذا أنزلت.“ ثم قال لي: ”اقرأ“: فقرأت، فقال: ”هكذا أنزلت. إن هذا القرآن أنزل على سبعة أحرف فاقرؤوا ما تيسر منه.“
Sayyiduna Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard Hisham ibn Hakim (may Allah be pleased with him) reciting Surah al-Furqan in a way that I did not recite it, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had taught me this Surah. I was about to attack him in haste, but I gave him respite. When he finished (his recitation), I wrapped his cloak around his neck and took him to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Then I said: O Messenger of Allah! I heard him (Hisham) reciting Surah al-Furqan in a manner different from the way you taught me. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to Hisham: "Recite!" So he recited as I had heard him. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "It was revealed in this way." Then he said to me: "Recite!" So I recited (the Surah), and he said: "It was revealed in this way." This Qur'an has been revealed upon seven modes (of recitation), so recite whatever is easy for you from it.
