Muwatta Imam Malik (Riwayat Ibn al-Qasim)

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Atik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to visit Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) during his illness and saw that he had become unconscious due to the severity of his pain. The Prophet (peace be upon him) called out to him, but he (Abdullah bin Thabit, may Allah be pleased with him) did not respond. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) recited «انا لله وانااليه راجعون» and said: "O Abu Rabi'! We are helpless regarding you." Then the women began to speak loudly and weep. (Jabir) Ibn Atik (may Allah be pleased with him) began to silence them, but the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Leave them. When he passes away, then let no one wail (with a loud voice)." The people asked: O Messenger of Allah! What is the meaning of «وجوب»? The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "When he passes away." Then his daughter said (calling out to her father): By Allah! I think you wished to be martyred and you had prepared to go out for jihad! So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Allah has raised his reward according to his intention. And what do you consider martyrdom to be?" The people said: To be killed in the way of Allah. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Besides being killed in the way of Allah, there are seven other types of martyrdom: the one who dies in a plague is a martyr, the one who drowns is a martyr, the one who dies of pleurisy (a disease of the side/ribs) is a martyr, the one who dies of a stomach disease is a martyr, the one who dies by burning is a martyr, the one who dies by being crushed under a roof or wall is a martyr, and the woman who dies in childbirth is a martyr."

And with this same chain (it is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "A man was walking on a path when he saw a thorny branch on the road, so he removed it from the path. Allah appreciated this and forgave him." And the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "There are five types of martyrs: the one who dies of plague, the one who dies of a stomach illness, the one who drowns, the one who dies under a collapsed building, and the one who is martyred in the way of Allah." And the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "If people knew what (reward) is in the call to prayer and the first row, and they had no way except to draw lots, they would draw lots. And if they knew how much (reward) there is in coming early for the Zuhr prayer, they would compete with each other to get ahead. And if they knew what (reward) is in the Isha and Fajr prayers, they would surely come, even if they had to crawl on their knees."
