Desire for Martyrdom Is Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH)
Hadith 556
347- وبه: أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: ”والذي نفسي بيده، لوددت أني أقاتل فى سبيل الله فأقتل، ثم أحيا فأقتل، ثم أحيا فأقتل، فكان أبو هريرة يقول ثلاثا: أشهد بالله.
And with this same chain (it is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "By the One in Whose hand is my soul! I wish that I fight in the way of Allah, then be killed, then be brought back to life (so I may fight again), then be killed, then be brought back to life, then be killed." Then Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, said three times: "I bear witness by Allah."
Hadith 557
506- مالك عن يحيى بن سعيد عن أبى صالح السمان عن أبى هريرة أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: ”لولا أن أشق على أمتي، لأحببت أن لا أتخلف عن سرية تخرج فى سبيل الله، ولكن لا أجد ما أحملهم عليه، ولا يجدون ما يتحملون عليه فيخرجون، ويشق عليهم أن يتخلفوا بعدي، فوددت أني أقاتل فى سبيل الله فأقتل، ثم أحيا فأقتل، ثم أحيا فأقتل.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If I did not fear hardship for my ummah, I would have liked not to stay behind from any military expedition that sets out in the way of Allah. But I do not have anything for your mounts, nor do the people have mounts so that they may set out (in the way of Allah), and it would be difficult for the people if they were to stay behind from me. Thus, I wish that I fight in the way of Allah and be killed, then be brought back to life, then be killed, then be brought back to life, then be killed."
