Ruling on Cutting the Thief’s Hand
Hadith 528
246- وبه: أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قطع سارقا فى مجن ثمنه ثلاثة دراهم. قال مالك: والمجن الدرقة والترس.
And with the same chain of narration (it is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, ordered the (right) hand of the thief to be cut off who had stolen a shield worth three dirhams. Imam Malik, may Allah have mercy on him, said: "Mujann" refers to a shield made of leather or iron.
Hadith 529
499- وبه: عن عائشة زوج النبى صلى الله عليه وسلم أنها قالت: ما طال على وما نسيت: القطع فى ربع دينار فصاعدا.
The wife of the Prophet, Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), said: Neither has a long time passed nor have I forgotten: for a quarter of a dinar or more (in theft), the hand is cut off.
