Hadith 414
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah al-Sulami (may Allah be pleased with him) that during the expedition of Banu Anmar (the expedition of Ghatafan), we set out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then (once) I was sitting under a tree when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) appeared, so I said: O Messenger of Allah! Please come into the shade. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) dismounted there. Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Then I picked up my bag and searched in it, and I found a cucumber, which I broke and presented to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He asked: Where did you get this from? I said: O Messenger of Allah! I brought it from Madinah. Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We had a companion whose provision for the journey we had prepared, and he used to graze our riding animals. I had prepared his provision for the journey, then he turned his back and went to graze the animals, and he had two old, torn sheets on him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw him and asked: “Does he have no clothes other than these two sheets?” I said: O Messenger of Allah! Yes, indeed, I have given him two garments which are tied up in a bundle. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Call him and order him to wear them.” I called him, so he wore those two garments. Then when he was about to leave, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “What is with him, may Allah strike his neck, would it not have been better for him?” Upon hearing this, the man said: O Messenger of Allah! (May my neck be struck) in the way of Allah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “In the way of Allah.” Then that man was martyred in the way of Allah.
