Muwatta Imam Malik (Riwayat Ibn al-Qasim)

It is narrated from Sayyida Fatima bint Qais (may Allah be pleased with her) that Abu Amr bin Hafs (may Allah be pleased with him) gave her an irrevocable (third) divorce while he was absent (from Madinah). Then he sent some barley through his agent, but she was displeased (because of the small amount). She said: "By Allah! There is nothing obligatory upon us for you." Then she went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him of this matter. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no maintenance (obligatory) for you from him." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered her to spend her waiting period in the house of Umm Sharik, then said: "My companions frequently visit this woman (because of her generosity), so spend your waiting period with Ibn Umm Maktum (may Allah be pleased with him), for he is a blind man; you can remove your headscarf and so on there. Then when your waiting period is over, inform me." (Fatima bint Qais, may Allah be pleased with her, said:) When my waiting period ended, I informed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that Muawiyah bin Abi Sufyan and Abu Jahm bin Hisham (may Allah be pleased with them) had sent me marriage proposals. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Abu Jahm does not put down his staff from his shoulder, and Muawiyah is poor, he has no wealth, but marry Usama bin Zaid." (Fatima) said: I disliked it, then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Marry Usama." So I married him, and Allah placed goodness in it, and I was so happy with him that others envied me.
