It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he was with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Abu Qatadah al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When we were on one of the roads to Makkah, he and some of his companions lagged behind and they had not put on ihram. Then they saw a wild donkey (a lawful wild animal), so he mounted his horse and asked his companions to give him his whip, but the companions refused. Then he asked them to give him his spear, but the companions also refused, so he took it himself, then attacked the wild donkey and hunted it. Some of the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ate from the meat of that wild donkey, and some refused to eat. Then when they met the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), they asked him about this (hunting), so he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: This is (lawful) food which Allah has given you to eat.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Al-Bahzi (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out from Madinah to go to Makkah while he was in the state of ihram. When he reached the place of Ruha’, there was a wild donkey lying there, wounded, with its shanks cut. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was informed about it, he said: “Leave it, perhaps its owner or the one who hunted it will come.” Then Bahzi (may Allah be pleased with him) came, who was its owner or the one who had hunted it, and he said: O Messenger of Allah! You may take it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) then ordered Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) to distribute it among the companions. Then he continued on until he reached the place of Athayah between Ruwaytha and ‘Arj, and saw a gazelle standing with its head bowed in the shade, and it had been struck by an arrow. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered a man to stand by it so that none of the people would disturb it until the people had moved on from there.
