Option to fast while traveling
Hadith 248
50- وبه: عن ابن عباس: أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم خرج إلى مكة عام الفتح فى رمضان فصام حتى بلغ الكديد ثم أفطر فأفطر الناس معه، وكانوا يأخذون بالأحدث فالأحدث من أمر رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم.
And with the same chain of narration, it is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that in the year of the conquest of Makkah, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out towards Makkah during Ramadan, and he fasted until he reached Kudayd (a place), then he broke his fast (did not fast), so the people also broke their fast with him, and the people (the noble Companions, may Allah be pleased with them all) used to act immediately upon the command of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
Hadith 249
147- قال مالك: حدثني حميد الطويل عن أنس بن مالك قال: سافرنا مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فى رمضان فلم يعب الصائم على المفطر، ولا المفطر على الصائم.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that we traveled with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) during Ramadan, and none of us who was fasting found fault with the one who was not fasting, nor did the one who was not fasting find any fault with the one who was fasting.
Hadith 250
438- وعن أبى بكر بن عبد الرحمن عن بعض أصحاب رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم أمر الناس فى سفره عام الفتح بالفطر، وقال: ”تقووا لعدوكم“ وصام رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم. قال أبو بكر: قال الذى حدثني: قد رأيت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم بالعرج يصب على رأسه الماء من العطش أو من الحر، ثم قيل: يا رسول الله إن طائفة من الناس صاموا حين صمت فلما كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم بالكديد دعا بقدح ماء فشرب وأفطر الناس معه. كمل حديث سمي وهو أحد عشر حديثا.
It is narrated from a companion of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, that in the year of the conquest of Makkah, during his journey, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, ordered the people not to fast, and said: Gain strength to face the enemies. And the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, kept the fast. Abu Bakr (ibn Abdur Rahman, may Allah have mercy on him) said: The one who narrated this hadith to me said: I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, at the place of ‘Arj, and due to thirst or heat, water was being poured over his head. Then it was said: O Messenger of Allah! You have kept the fast, so a group among the people also kept the fast. Then when the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, reached the place of Kudayd, he asked for a bowl of water, then he, peace and blessings be upon him, drank the water, and the people also broke their fast with him. The ahadith narrated by Sumi (may Allah have mercy on him) are completed, and they are eleven ahadith.
Hadith 251
435- وبه أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: ”السفر قطعة من العذاب يمنع أحدكم نومه وطعامه وشرابه فإذا قضى أحدكم نهمته من وجهه فليعجل إلى أهله .“
And with the same chain of narration, it is narrated from (Sayyiduna Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Travel is a portion of torment; it deprives a person of his sleep, food, and drink. So when someone has fulfilled his purpose (of travel), he should hasten to return home."
Hadith 252
465- وبه: عن عائشة زوج النبى صلى الله عليه وسلم أن حمزة بن عمرو الأسلمي قال لرسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: أأصوم فى السفر؟ وكان كثير الصيام، فقال له النبى صلى الله عليه وسلم: ”إن شئت فصم، وإن شئت فأفطر .“
It is narrated from the wife of the Prophet, Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), that Hamza bin Amr Al-Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him): "O Messenger of Allah! I fast regularly. Should I fast while traveling as well?" He used to fast frequently. So the Prophet (peace be upon him) said to him: "If you wish, then fast, and if you wish, then break your fast."
