122- وبه: عن أنس أنه قال: كنا نصلي العصر ثم يخرج الإنسان إلى بني عمرو بن عوف فيجدهم يصلون العصر.
And with the same chain of narration, it is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that we would perform the Asr prayer, then a man would go towards Banu Amr bin Awf and find them performing the Asr prayer.

Jurisprudential Explanation: ➊ It is not a legal (shar‘i) issue that the prayer in all the mosques of a city or village must be performed at exactly the same time. Rather, the issue is that the prayer should be performed at its earliest time. Therefore, in some mosques, the prayer may be performed exactly at the earliest time, and in others, a little after that, provided that the sun is well-risen and bright. Deliberately performing the ‘Asr prayer when the sun has turned yellow, is near setting, or during the disliked (makruh) time is a wrong action, which has been prohibited. ➋ The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) used to perform the ‘Asr prayer exactly at its earliest time. ➌ The earliest time for ‘Asr begins when the shadow of an object is equal to its length, and the preferred time ends when the shadow is twice its length. After this, the time until Maghrib is considered permissible only due to a legal excuse, such as if someone forgets or falls asleep, etc. ➍ According to the three Imams (Malik, Shafi‘i, and Ahmad) and Qadi Abu Yusuf and Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Shaybani and others, the time for ‘Asr enters when the shadow of an object is equal to its length. See [الاوسط لابن المنذر 2/329، والكواكب الدري 1/90 حاشيه], and this is the correct view. ➎ It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Abbas (radi Allahu anhu) that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: Jibril (alayhis salam) led me in prayer twice near the House (Ka‘bah)... then he led the ‘Asr prayer when the shadow of everything became equal to its length. [سنن الترمذي : 149، وقال : ”حديث حسن“ وصححه ابن خزيمه : 352، وابن حبان : 279، وابن الجارود : 149، والحاكم : 1/193، وغيرهم وحسنه النيموي التقليدي فى آثار السنن : 194] ➏ One statement of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radi Allahu anhu) is: “When the shadow becomes twice (the length), then perform ‘Asr.” This means that you may perform the (preferred) ‘Asr prayer up to the time when the shadow is twice the length.
