It is narrated from Sayyiduna Miqdad bin Aswad (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) instructed him to ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about a man who, when he goes to his wife, experiences the emission of madhi (pre-seminal fluid); what is obligatory upon such a man? Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Because the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is my wife, I feel shy to ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about this issue. Miqdad (may Allah be pleased with him) said: So I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about it, and he said: "If any of you experiences such a condition, he should wash his private part with water and perform wudu for prayer."

Hadith Authentication: [
Jurisprudential Points: ➊ When asking about an issue, one should pay special attention to modesty and shyness. Since Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu was married to the daughter of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, he did not ask this question himself out of consideration for modesty, but instead asked Sayyiduna Miqdad radi Allahu anhu to inquire. This shows that Islam teaches etiquette and good manners. ➋ Ritual bath (ghusl) becomes obligatory upon the emission of semen (mani), but if only pre-seminal fluid (madhi) is discharged, then ritual bath is not obligatory; rather, ablution (wudu) becomes obligatory. ➌ Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu also gave the legal verdict (fatwa) that ablution is required due to the emission of madhi. See [الموطأ رواية يحييٰ 41/1 ح 84 وسنده صحيح] ● There is consensus (ijma') on the obligation of ablution due to madhi. [التمهيد: 208/21] ➍ Although the chain of transmission (isnad) of the above hadith [الموطأ 420] is not connected (muttasil), it is still authentic due to the connected narration of [صحيح مسلم 303]. All praise is due to Allah. ➎ If an issue is not known, one should refer to a scholar for it. ➏ Referring to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and asking a scholar about an issue is not blind following (taqlid). ➐ Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu was not the knower of the unseen (al-ghayb) nor the remover of difficulties (mushkil kasha). ➑ Muslims should cooperate with one another in good and permissible matters. ➒ Being concerned about religious matters and prayer is a distinguishing mark of the people of faith. ➓ It is not necessary that every great scholar knows every issue at all times.
