And with this same chain of narration, it is reported that (Ishaq bin Abdullah bin Abi Talha) heard Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) saying: Abu Talha said to (his wife) Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her): I have heard the voice of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sounding weak, and I sense the effect of hunger in it. Do you have anything (to eat)? She said: Yes! Then she took out some loaves of barley bread, then took her shawl and wrapped the bread in it, covering it from above and below, then placed it under my arm and made part of it my garment. Then I was sent to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). I saw that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting and people were sitting around him. I stood near them, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Did Abu Talha send you? I said: Yes! He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: For food? I said: Yes! So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his companions: Get up. (Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, said:) So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out and I went ahead until I came and informed Abu Talha (may Allah be pleased with him). Abu Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Umm Sulaym! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is coming with people, and we do not have food to feed them. Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Allah and His Messenger know best. Then Abu Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) went and met the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and Abu Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) both came. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Umm Sulaym! Bring whatever you have. So she brought the bread. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that the bread be broken into pieces and made into a dish, and Umm Sulaym poured some ghee from a vessel over it, so it became like a dish of churī (crumbled bread with ghee). Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recited the supplication that Allah willed, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bring ten men." Ten men were called, and they ate to their fill and left. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Call ten men." Ten men were called, and they ate to their fill and left. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Call ten men." Ten men were called, and they ate to their fill and left. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called ten men, until all the people, who were seventy or eighty, ate to their fill.

Jurisprudential Points: ① This narration is also among the proofs of Prophethood and was a magnificent miracle, in that a small amount of food sufficed seventy (70) people who ate to their fill. ② Apart from the specification of fasting continuously (sawm al-wisal), sometimes the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would also feel hunger. In the state of continuous fasting (wisal), Allah ta‘ala would feed and give him drink, as is established from other hadiths. ③ The people of faith should continue to invite one another so that love and affection may increase. ④ It is permissible, at times, to bring along individuals who were not invited to a meal by a friend in whom one has complete trust, but it must be remembered that it is not permissible to cause any brother mental, moral, or financial discomfort. ⑤ The belief of the Companions was that Allah and His Messenger know best (possess knowledge), but it should be clear that they did not hold the belief that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam possessed knowledge of the unseen (‘ilm al-ghayb), because being the Knower of the Unseen (‘Alim al-Ghayb) is an exclusive attribute of Allah. There are many proofs in the Qur’an and Hadith regarding the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam not possessing knowledge of the unseen, some of which are present in this very book. ⑥ If there is not enough space in the house, it is permissible to feed people in groups. ⑦ The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and the noble Companions lived through many hardships. There were times when nothing was available to eat for several days, yet they remained patient and grateful. Radi Allahu anhum ajma‘in. ⑧ One should strive to serve the guest and the invited person with the best possible food. ⑨ It is permissible for the host or friend to go outside the house to welcome the guest. ⑩ The household member does not need permission to enter his own house, and likewise, those who are called by him do not need permission to enter.
In addition, a few more benefits are presented: ➊ It is permissible to recite the supplication for blessing (barakah) before eating. ➋ If one has complete trust in a friend, he may exercise necessary authority in his house. ➌ If food is rarely available, it is permissible to eat to one’s fill; otherwise, it should be divided into three portions. ➍ One must always submit to the decision of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, whether or not it is within our limited understanding. ➎ All types of food, such as churi (crumbled bread with ghee or sugar), etc., are permissible except for those foods which are prohibited by the Shari‘ah.
