What to Do When Seeing a Bad Dream?

512- مالك عن يحيى بن سعيد عن أبى سلمة بن عبد الرحمن قال: سمعت أبا قتادة ابن ربعي يقول: سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول: ”الرؤيا الصالحة من الله والحلم من الشيطان، فإذا رأى أحدكم الشيء يكرهه، فلينفث عن يساره ثلاث مرات إذا استيقظ ويتعوذ من شرها، فإنها لن تضره إن شاء الله“ قال أبو سلمة: إن كنت لأرى الرؤيا هي أثقل على من الجبل، فلما سمعت هذا الحديث فما كنت لأباليها. كمل حديث يحيى بن سعيد، وهو ستة وعشرون حديثا.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah bin Rabi’ (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: “A good dream is from Allah and a bad dream is from Satan. Therefore, if anyone sees something in a dream which he dislikes, he should spit lightly three times to his left. When he wakes up, he should seek refuge from its evil. Insha’Allah, it will not harm him.” Abu Salamah (bin Abdur Rahman, may Allah have mercy on him) said: I used to see such dreams which were heavier on me than a mountain, but when I heard this hadith, I no longer cared about them. The ahadith narrated by Yahya bin Sa’id (al-Ansari) are now complete, and these are twenty-six (26) ahadith.

[وأخرجه النسائي فى الكبريٰ 383/4 ح 7627، من حديث مالك به ورواه البخاري 5747، و مسلم 2261، من حديث يحيٰ بن سعيد الانصاري به]
Jurisprudential Points:
➊ In the case of seeing a bad dream, after spitting lightly three times to the left, one should seek Allah’s protection from Satan. Insha’Allah, there will be no harm.
➋ Abu Salamah bin Abdur Rahman bin Awf rahimahullah was always eager to act upon the hadith at all times.
➌ A good dream should only be related to a trustworthy friend. See [صحيح بخاري 6985] and Tafaqquh al-Muwatta, previous hadith: 4.
➍ A bad dream should not be narrated to anyone. See: [صحيح بخاري 6985، 7044، 7045]
➎ Many dreams are also from Satan, and sometimes even righteous people may see satanic dreams.
