It is narrated from a man of Banu Asad (may Allah be pleased with him) that I and my family settled in Baqi’ Gharqad, so my family said: Go to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and ask him for something to eat for us. They began to mention their needs and necessities. So I went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and saw a man with him who was asking (for something), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was saying: “I have nothing to give you.” Then that man turned back angrily, saying: By my life! You give to whomever you wish. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “He is angry with me because I have nothing to give him. If any of you asks (in such a state) while he has one uqiyyah of silver or its equivalent, then he has asked excessively.” The Asadi companion said: Our milch she-camel is better than one uqiyyah of silver. (Imam) Malik said: An uqiyyah is forty dirhams. The Asadi (companion, may Allah be pleased with him) said: Then I went back and did not ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for anything. Then after that, barley and dried dates were brought to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so he distributed from it and gave us too, until Allah made us self-sufficient.
