Keeping dogs without purpose is not allowed
Hadith 595
256- وبه: أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: ”من اقتنى كلبا ليس بكلب صيد ولا كلب ماشية نقص من أجره كل يوم قيراطان.“
And with the same chain of narration (from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both), it is narrated that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Whoever keeps a dog other than a dog for hunting or for guarding livestock, then two qirats are deducted from his reward (good deeds) every day."
