Muwatta Imam Malik (Riwayat Ibn al-Qasim)

And with this same chain (it is narrated from Sayyiduna Sahl, may Allah be pleased with him) that a woman came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: O Messenger of Allah! I offer myself to you. Then she stood for a long time, so a man stood up and said: O Messenger of Allah! If you have no need of her, then marry her to me. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Do you have anything which you can give her as a dowry?" The man said: I have nothing except this lower garment. So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "If you give her your lower garment, then you will have no lower garment left. Go and look for something." He said: I have nothing. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Look, even if it is only an iron ring." The man searched but found nothing. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to him: "Do you know anything from the Qur'an by heart?" He said: Yes! Such and such surahs. He mentioned some surahs before the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to him: I have married this woman to you in exchange for the Qur'an that you know by heart.
