Muwatta Malik (Qasim)

Takhrij al-Hadith: [واخرجه البخاري 5031، و مسلم 789، من حديث مالك به من رواية يحييٰ بن يحييٰ و سقط من الأصل]
Jurisprudential Points:
➊ A memorizer (hafiz) should continue to recite his assigned portion (manzil) of the Qur’an regularly even after having memorized it, so that he does not forget it. If the assigned portion is not recited regularly, the Qur’an is quickly forgotten.
➋ Students should frequently engage in scholarly discussion.
➌ Explaining a point by giving an example is the best method.
➍ Performing deeds is easy, whereas preserving them is difficult; therefore, emphasis has been placed on safeguarding deeds along with performing them.

Hadith Commentary:

Because if one stops reciting the Qur’an, he will forget it. It has often been observed that many memorizers (huffaz) abandon the recitation of the Qur’an out of laziness, and then all their effort is wasted and they forget the Noble Qur’an.

The continuous recitation of the Noble Qur’an and the act of always reading it has been likened to a camel tied with a rope, which is at risk of running away.
As long as it is watched over and protected, and its recitation is maintained, it will remain memorized, just as a camel tied with ropes cannot run away.

The comparison is made with a camel because, compared to other domestic animals, a camel runs away more often, and after it escapes, catching it becomes very difficult.
It has often been observed that many memorizers (huffaz) abandon their revision of the Noble Qur’an.
Then all their effort is wasted, and the Noble Qur’an departs from their hearts; memorizing forgotten Qur’an becomes very difficult.
(إِلَّا مَا رَحِمَ رَبِّي ۚ)

943. Commentary:

➊ In this blessed hadith, encouragement is given towards frequently reviewing the Noble Qur’an and reciting it abundantly in order to preserve it.

➋ It is necessary for the memorizer of the Qur’an (hafiz) to keep reciting the Qur’an repeatedly and to pay attention to the similar verses (mutashabihat), otherwise there is a risk of forgetting.

➌ In order to clarify a matter, one should present an example so that the reality of the situation becomes closer to the minds.

Benefits and Issues:
➊
A camel is made to sit down and its knee is tied with a rope. This rope is called (ʿiqāl). Because of this, the camel cannot run away.

➋
After memorizing the Noble Qur’an, one should continue to recite it so that it remains memorized. If one does not recite it regularly, the memorized Qur’an is forgotten.

➍
If the recitation is done in obligatory and supererogatory (nafl) prayers, especially in the night prayer (tahajjud), then the attainment of blessings is greater.
