It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When a Muslim or a believing servant performs ablution, then the sins committed by his eyes (by looking) come out from his face with the water or with the last drop of water," or he (peace be upon him) said something similar. "Then when he washes both his hands, the sins committed by his hands come out with the water or with the last drop of water. Then when he washes both his feet, the sins committed by his feet come out with the water or with the last drop of water, until he emerges completely purified from sins."

Jurisprudential Understanding (Tafaqquh): ➊ With the drops of ablution (wudu), minor sins are shed. ➋ Some people go around claiming that Imam Abu Hanifah rahimahullah used to see people’s sins falling with the drops of ablution, whereas this statement is completely baseless, false, and invalid. There is no evidence for this in any authentic (sahih) or good (hasan) narration. ➌ When there is such a great virtue in performing ablution, then how great must the virtue of performing prayer (salah) be. Also see [الموطأ حديث:476، النسائي 90/1 ح 146] ➍ Remaining in a state of ablution outside of prayer times is also a meritorious and superior act. ➎ The impurity of used ablution water is not established by any hadith. It should be noted that “used water” refers to the water left over in the vessel. ➏ Ablution (wudu) is an action, and an action is not valid without intention.
