Hadith 545

440- وبه: أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: ”من حلف بيمين فرأى خيرا منها فليكفر عن يمينه وليفعل.“
And with the same chain of narration, it is narrated from (Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Whoever swears an oath about something and then sees that something else is better, let him offer expiation for his oath and do that which is better."

Jurisprudential Explanation:
➊ Apart from human rights, if a person swears an oath to perform a good deed and later intends to do another good deed, it is permissible to perform the second deed after offering expiation (kaffarah) for the oath. It should be noted that the promise must be fulfilled.
➋ The expiation (kaffarah) for an oath is to feed ten needy people with average food, clothe them, or free a slave. Whoever cannot do this should fast for three days. See [سورة المائده آيت : 89]
➌ There is no expiation (kaffarah) for oaths that are against the Book and Sunnah or are frivolous; rather, one should repent and break such an oath immediately.
