Replying to the greeting of a non-Muslim
Hadith 480
292- وبه: قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: ”إن اليهود إذا سلم عليكم أحدهم فإنما يقول: السام عليكم، فقل: عليك.“
And with this same chain (it is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "When any of the Jews greets you with salam, he says: «السام عليكم» (death be upon you, i.e., may you die), so you should reply: «عليك» (and upon you)."
