Hadith 457

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Uthman bin Abi al-As al-Thaqafi (may Allah be pleased with him) that he went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "I have a pain that is about to destroy me." He says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Place your right hand (on the place of pain) and say seven times: «أَعُوذُ بِعِزَّةِ اللَّهِ وَقُدْرَتِهِ ، مِنْ شَرِّ مَا أَجِدُ» I seek refuge in Allah’s honor and power from the evil of what I find." He said that I did so, and Allah removed my pain. I continuously instruct my family and other people to do the same.

Jurisprudential Understanding (Tafaqquh):
➊ Seeking treatment for illness is established from the Sunnah, but one should also continue to supplicate to Allah, because He alone is the One who grants healing from illness.
➋ It is correct to go to a hakim (traditional healer), tabib (physician), or doctor for the treatment of illness, and likewise, it is permissible to go to someone who recites prescribed (masnun) and non-shirk, non-innovative (non-bid‘ah) supplications (adhkar).
➌ The attributes of Allah, exalted is He, are not created, because it is permissible to seek refuge with Allah through them, whereas it is not permissible to seek refuge with Allah through created beings. See: [التمهيد 29/23]
➍ Through ruqyah (recitation for healing) and supplication (du‘a), if Allah wills, He removes afflictions.
➎ One must always have complete certainty and faith in Allah, exalted is He.
➏ This is a point of reflection for those practitioners (‘amil) who are preoccupied with making people their disciples (murid); they should instead teach the public the prescribed (masnun) ruqyah and supplications (adhkar), so that people may remain steadfast upon the Book and the Sunnah.
