A Believer’s Illness Is an Expiation for Sins

520- وعن يزيد بن خصيفة عن عروة بن الزبير أنه قال: سمعت عائشة زوج النبى صلى الله عليه وسلم تقول: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ”لا يصيب المؤمن من مصيبة حتى الشوكة إلا قص بها أو كفر بها من خطاياه“ لا يدري يزيد أيتهما قال عروة.
It is narrated from the wife of the Prophet, Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whatever affliction befalls a believer, even if it is only a thorn, it becomes either retribution or expiation for his sins." Yazid (bin Khusaifah) said that he does not know which words 'Urwah (bin Zubair) used: retribution or expiation?

Jurisprudential Understanding (Tafaqquh):
➊ By exercising patience over calamities and illnesses, sins are expiated, meaning that sins are forgiven. ➋ Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mas'ud radi Allahu anhu said: No reward is written for illness itself... but it becomes an expiation for sin. [التمهيد 26/23 وسنده صحيح]
