And with this same chain (it is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas, may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: Before the prohibition of wine, I was serving wine made from dates and dried dates to Abu Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah, Abu Talhah al-Ansari, and Ubayy ibn Ka'b, may Allah be pleased with them, when a man came and informed them: Indeed, wine has been made unlawful. So Abu Talhah, may Allah be pleased with him, said: O Anas! Get up and break these pitchers. Then I took a stone (a pestle) and struck those pitchers until they were shattered into pieces.

Jurisprudential Points: ➊ A solitary report (khabar wahid), if authentic, is authoritative. ➋ The noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) would always submit themselves before the Prophetic command instead of engaging in argumentation, and were filled with the spirit of following the Sunnah. ➌ To reject an authentic hadith by labeling it as a solitary report or conjectural is the practice of those who oppose the Companions (radi Allahu anhum). ➍ It is not permissible to make vinegar from wine; otherwise, the Companions (radi Allahu anhum) would have made vinegar from wine instead of pouring it away. In an authentic hadith, it is reported that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) forbade making vinegar from wine. See [صحيح مسلم 1983، ترقيم دارالسلام : 514] ➎ If date wine (nabidh) intoxicates, it is khamr, and the claim that khamr refers only to grape wine is false. Rather, anything that intoxicates is khamr, and khamr is forbidden whether in small or large quantity. ➏ Like all impurities, khamr (wine) is also impure (najis). See [التمهيد 1/245] ➐ Ownership of wine and its buying and selling are not permissible. ➑ If vinegar is made from wine, its use is not permissible because the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) forbade it. However, if it becomes vinegar by itself, its use is permissible because vinegar itself is lawful.
