Hadith 316

And with this same chain of narration, it is reported from (Sayyiduna Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade the person in ihram from wearing such cloth that has been dyed with saffron or (fragrant herb) wars. And the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Whoever does not have open sandals (slippers), then he should wear socks (and boots) and cut them below the ankles."

Benefits and Issues:
➊ It is prohibited for a man to wear sewn clothing, however, in a situation of necessity, it is permissible to wear shalwar or pajama.

➋ In the state of ihram, it is also not permissible to wear leather socks (khuff), but if someone does not have shoes, he may wear them.

➌ The opinion of Allamah al-Albani rahimahullah and other Saudi scholars is that if, due to not having shoes, one has to wear socks (khuff), then it is not necessary to cut them, because the command to cut was given in Madinah, but later, during the journey of Hajj, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam permitted wearing socks (khuff) in such a situation and did not command them to be cut, even though at that time there were many people present who had not heard the command to cut the socks from the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam in Madinah. If cutting had been necessary, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would certainly have clarified it at that time. (Fatawa Islamiyyah: 311/2, published by Darussalam)
