Jurisprudential Explanation: ➊ Keeping the beard is obligatory. ➋ Both trimming and shaving the mustache are permissible. Imam Sufyan ibn ‘Uyaynah al-Makki rahimahullah had his mustache shaved. See [التاريخ الكبير لا بن ابي خيثمه ح 387 وسنده صحيح، دوسرا نسخه 311] ● In one hadith, it is mentioned that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam trimmed the mustache of Sayyiduna Mughirah ibn Shu‘bah radi Allahu anhu with a miswak or ordered him to trim it. [سنن ابي داود 188، وسنده صحيح] Mughirah radi Allahu anhu had a large mustache. ● Sayyiduna ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab radi Allahu anhu, on certain special occasions, used to twirl his mustache. [العلل ومعرفة الرجال : 1507، وسنده صحيح، دوسرا نسخه: 73/2 ح 1589] Also see: [طبقات ابن سعد 326/3 وسنده صحيح] It is better to trim the mustache rather than shave it. ➌ In view of the reports from Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar radi Allahu anhu and others, it is submitted that leaving the beard completely and not cutting it at all is superior; however, it is permissible to cut what exceeds a fist-length. And Allah knows best.
