Jurisprudential Explanation: ➊ The five matters mentioned in this hadith are from the natural religion (din al-fitrah). Whether it is trimming the nails or cutting the moustache, etc., the maximum limit for these is forty days. It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik radi Allahu anhu that we were prescribed not to leave trimming the moustache, cutting the nails, plucking the armpit hair, and shaving the pubic hair for more than forty nights. [صحيح مسلم : 258، دارالسلام : 599]
➋ In a narration from Sayyidah Aisha Siddiqa radi Allahu anha, leaving the beard, using the siwak (tooth-stick), putting water in the nose, washing the joints of the fingers, and performing istinja (cleansing after relieving oneself) are also included in the fitrah. [ديكهئے صحيح مسلم : 261، دارالسلام : 604 و سنده حسن]
➌ Although the above hadith is mawquf (stopped at the Companion) in the manuscripts of al-Muwatta’, Hafiz Ibn Abd al-Barr has narrated it with a sahih (authentic) chain from Imam Malik as marfu‘ (attributed to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). [التمهيد 21/56] Also see [صحيح بخاري 5891، وصحيح مسلم 257]
➍ Trimming or cutting the moustache is better, and the most virtuous is to trim the moustache so much that the skin becomes visible. See [صحيح بخاري قبل ح5888 تعليقاً، الاثرم نحو المعنيٰ بحواله تغليق التعليق 5/72، وسنده حسن]
◄ Ubaydullah bin Umar bin Maysarah al-Qawariyri rahimahullah said: One day Sufyan bin ‘Uyaynah came to us and he had shaved his moustache with a razor. [التاريخ الكبير لابن ابي خيثمه ص378، 379 ح387، وسنده صحيح] It is thus clear that the statement of some scholars that shaving the moustache is mutilation (muthlah), etc., is not correct.
