Hadith 267

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to observe i'tikaf in the middle ten days of Ramadan. Then one year he observed i'tikaf until the night of the twenty-first (21st of Ramadan), the morning of which he would come out of i'tikaf. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever has observed i'tikaf with me should also observe i'tikaf in the last ten days, for I was shown that (special) night, then I was made to forget it, and I saw myself prostrating in water and mud on its morning." Therefore, seek it in the last ten days and seek it in every odd night. Abu Sa'id (al-Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him) said: That night it rained, and the roof of the mosque was made of palm branches, which started to leak. Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) said: My two eyes saw that on the morning of the twenty-first (21st), there were traces of water and mud on the forehead and nose of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).

Jurisprudential Points:
➊ I'tikaf (spiritual retreat) is permissible in all three ten-day periods (ashra) of Ramadan, but it is best to perform i'tikaf in the last ten days so that one may attain the virtue of Laylat al-Qadr.
➋ One should not avoid getting one's forehead soiled with dust while prostrating.
➌ This hadith is a supreme proof of the humility and modesty of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
➍ In the time of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), the floor of Masjid Nabawi was unpaved (bare earth).
➎ Laylat al-Qadr occurs in the odd nights of the last ten days. See: [الموطأ 283، مسلم: 1165/206]
➏ I'tikaf is a Sunnah.
➐ No matter how great a scholar may be, sometimes he too can forget some evidence.
➑ I'tikaf can be for less than ten days, for example, even for one day, as established by other evidences.
◈ It is also permissible to perform i'tikaf for the entire month.
➒ It is necessary to place both the forehead and the nose on the ground during prostration.
