And with the same chain of narration (it is narrated from Sayyidah Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her) that a man said to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: My mother has passed away suddenly, and I think that if she had the opportunity to speak, she would have given charity. Can I give charity on her behalf? The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Yes!" So he gave charity on behalf of his mother.

Takhrij al-Hadith: [وأخرجه البخاري 2760، من حديث مالك، ومسلم 51/1004 بعد ح1630، من حديث هشام بن عروة به وصححه ابن خزيمه 2500، وابن حبان الموارد : 857]
Jurisprudential Points: ➊ Giving charity (sadaqah) on behalf of the deceased is permissible. ➋ Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah rahimahullah says: «وهو ينتفع بكل ما يصل إليه من كل مسلم۔ سواءً كان من أقاربه أو غيرهم كما ينتفع بصلاة المصلين عليه ودعائهم له عند قبره۔» And (the deceased) benefits from everything that reaches him from a Muslim, without distinction between relatives and non-relatives, just as he benefits from those who perform the funeral prayer and those who supplicate at the grave. [مجموع فتاويٰ ابن تيميه ج24 ص367] It is thus clear that the statement of those who say that the reward of charity reaches only from close relatives or children is not correct. ➌ Sayyiduna Sa’d ibn ‘Ubadah radi Allahu anhu went on some military expeditions with the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and during that time his mother passed away in Madinah. She was told: Make a bequest. She said: To whom should I make a bequest? The wealth belongs to Sa’d. She passed away before Sa’d radi Allahu anhu returned. When he arrived, he asked the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam: If I give charity on her (my mother’s) behalf, will it benefit her? The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam replied: Yes. Sa’d radi Allahu anhu said: Such-and-such garden is charity on her behalf. [الموطأ 2/760 ح1527، وهو صحيح، سنن النسائي : 3617 وصححه ابن خزيمه : 2500، وابن حبان، الموارد : 857] ➍ One should also fulfill such wishes of the parents which they were unable to express verbally. ➎ Many innovations (bid‘ah) have become prevalent among the masses in the name of charity, such as the “Gyarhwin” (the eleventh) in the name of Shaykh ‘Abd al-Qadir Jilani rahimahullah, etc. One should avoid these innovations.
