Hadith 214

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever performs the ritual bath of major impurity on the day of Jumu'ah and then goes (to the mosque) in the first hour, it is as if he has offered a camel as a sacrifice. Whoever goes in the second hour, it is as if he has offered a cow as a sacrifice. Whoever goes in the third hour, it is as if he has offered a ram with horns as a sacrifice. Whoever goes in the fourth hour, it is as if he has offered a chicken as a sacrifice. Whoever goes in the fifth hour, it is as if he has offered an egg as a sacrifice. Then, when the Imam comes out (for the sermon), the angels are present to listen to the remembrance (khutbah), closing their registers."

Takhrij al-Hadith:
[وأخرجه البخاري 881، ومسلم 850، من حديث مالك به]

Jurisprudential Points:
➊ Performing a ritual bath (ghusl) on Friday in the manner of the ritual bath for major impurity (janabah) is extremely virtuous. See: Hadith [البخاري 879، 877 ومسلم 846، 844]
➋ Going to the mosque at the earliest time for the Friday prayer is a deed of great reward.
➌ In this hadith, the sermon (khutbah) has been referred to as "remembrance" (dhikr), which indicates that the khutbah is not a prayer (salah) but rather an address of admonition and advice to the people. Therefore, delivering the khutbah in languages other than Arabic is also permissible. For details, see: The book “Ruh al-Khutbah” by Shaykh Abu ‘Umar ‘Abd al-‘Aziz Nuristani (hafizahullah).
➍ Sacrificing a camel is superior to sacrificing a cow, and sacrificing a cow is superior to sacrificing a ram. And Allah knows best.
➎ Even offering a small thing as charity (sadaqah) in the way of Allah will earn reward according to one’s intention.
➏ This hadith also shows that a person who comes to the mosque at the exact time of the prayer and misses listening to the Friday sermon (khutbah) is deprived of the aforementioned reward.
➐ What is meant by the sacrifice of an egg is to present an egg to a poor needy person as a gift or charity.
➑ The egg of a lawful (halal) bird is lawful (halal).
