It is narrated from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the things women have invented nowadays, if the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had seen them, he would have forbidden them from (going to) the mosque, just as the women of Bani Israel were forbidden. Yahya (ibn Sa'id al-Ansari, the narrator) asked Umrah (bint Abd al-Rahman, may Allah have mercy on them): Were the women of Bani Israel forbidden? She replied: Yes!

Jurisprudential Explanation: ➊ If women do not observe the proper Islamic regulations in the mosques, it is permissible for the caliph to prohibit such women from entering the mosques as a form of admonition. ➋ It is permissible for women to perform prayers in the mosques. ➌ During the time of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), women used to perform prayers in the Prophet’s Mosque. ➍ It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhu) that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: «إذا استأذنکم نساؤکم باللیل إلی المساجد فأذنوا لھن۔» When your wives seek your permission to go to the mosque at night, then grant them permission. [صحيح بخاري : 865، صحيح مسلم : 442، دارالسلام : 989] ● On one occasion, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: If only we would leave this door for women (i.e., designate it specifically for them)... After that, (Sayyiduna) Ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhu) never entered through that door until his death. [سنن ابي داود : 571 وسنده صحيح] ● On one occasion, the son of Ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhu) said: We will certainly prevent women from going to the mosque, otherwise they will use it as a pretext (for mischief). Upon hearing this, Ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhuma) rebuked and struck him, and said: I narrate to you the hadith of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), and you say, “No!” [صحيح مسلم : 442، دارالسلام : 992۔ 994]
