Hadith 182

And with this same chain (it is narrated from Sayyida Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her) that during the time of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, there was a solar eclipse, so the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, led the people in prayer. He stood for a long time, then bowed and made a long bowing, then stood again for a long time, and this standing was shorter than the first. Then he bowed and made a long bowing, and this bowing was less than the first. Then he raised his head from bowing and prostrated, then did the same in the second rak‘ah. When he finished with salam, the sun had become bright again. He addressed the people and, after praising and glorifying Allah, said: “The sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah; they do not eclipse because of anyone’s death or life. If you see these signs, then supplicate to Allah, say takbir, and give charity.” Then he said: O community of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! If any servant, male or female, of Allah commits adultery, then Allah is most possessive regarding it. O community of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! By Allah! If you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much.

Jurisprudential Points:
➊ The eclipse prayer (Salat al-Khusuf) should be performed in congregation.
➋ The eclipse prayer consists of two units (rak‘ahs), and in each unit there are two bowings (ruku‘).
➌ After the eclipse prayer, delivering a sermon and giving admonition and reminder is Sunnah.
➍ The occurrence of a solar or lunar eclipse is not due to anyone’s birth or death, but rather it is under the laws of nature created by Allah, the Exalted. Whether natural phenomena are ordinary events or not, one should take heed from them and awaken from the slumber of heedlessness.
➎ In times of calamity, making supplications, proclaiming the greatness of Allah (takbir), and giving charity not only bring reward, but are also among the best means for the removal of hardships and afflictions.
➏ Many calamities befall people due to their sins.
➐ One should always avoid futile and useless talk.
➑ Concern for the Hereafter and remembrance of death put an end to jest and amusement, and make the attainment of success in the Hereafter the purpose of life.
➒ Adultery (zina) is a major sin.
➓ There is none more protective (ghayur) than Allah, the Exalted, and He is protective regarding the indecency of His servants. Also see: [الموطأ حديث : 171]
