Hadith 179

It is narrated from the companion who performed the prayer of fear with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, on the occasion of the Battle of Dhat al-Riqa'. One group formed a row with him while the other group remained facing the enemy. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, led those who were praying with him in one rak'ah, then he remained standing and they completed the second rak'ah by themselves. Then (after saying salam) they left and formed a row facing the enemy. The other group came and performed one rak'ah with him, which was the remaining rak'ah of his prayer, then he remained seated and they completed their prayer, then he said salam with them.

Jurisprudential Explanation:
➊ There are several methods of performing the prayer of fear (salat al-khawf), such as praying one rak‘ah or two rak‘ahs, etc.
➋ At all times, Muslims should remain steadfast in defense.
➌ Prayer is not excused under any circumstance except where there is a specific evidence of exemption in the Book and Sunnah, such as it being prohibited for a menstruating woman (ha’idhah) to pray during her menstrual period.
➍ The different methods of the prayer of fear are based on different situations, and whichever is needed will be acted upon accordingly.
➎ It is narrated from Nafi‘ that when Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (radi Allahu anhu) was asked about the prayer of fear, he would say: The imam will go forward with one group and lead them in one rak‘ah. Between them and the enemy (disbelievers) will be the other group who have not yet prayed. When the first group has completed one rak‘ah, they will go back and stand in the place of the second group who have not prayed, and they will not say the salam. Those who have not prayed will come forward and pray one rak‘ah with the imam. Then the imam will complete two rak‘ahs and say the salam. Each group will then individually complete their remaining rak‘ah, so that each will have prayed two rak‘ahs. And if the state of fear is severe, then they will pray standing or on their mounts, facing the qiblah or not facing the qiblah. Nafi‘ said: I understand that Ibn ‘Umar (radi Allahu anhu) narrated this from the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). [الموطأ 1 / 184 ح443 وسنده صحيح]
