And with the same chain of narration (from Sayyidah Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her), it is narrated that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to pray thirteen rak'ahs at night, then when the call to prayer for Fajr was given, he would pray two light rak'ahs.

Jurisprudential Explanation:
➊ The night voluntary prayer (nafl) consists of eleven units (rak‘ahs), and when the two Sunnah units after the obligatory ‘Isha prayer are included, the night prayer becomes thirteen units. In one narration, it is mentioned that among these thirteen units are also included the Witr and the two units of the morning (Fajr) prayer. See: [صحيح بخاري 1140]

From a narration of [موطأ امام مالك رواية ابن القاسم : 312، رواية يحييٰ بن يحييٰ : 1/122 ح265], it is established that among these thirteen units are also the first two light units. In one hadith, it is mentioned that Sayyiduna Sa’ib bin Yazid radi Allahu anhu said: During the time of ‘Umar radi Allahu anhu, we used to perform thirteen units. Regarding this, Nīmwi the Muqallid writes: «أى مع الركعتين بعد العشاء» that is, along with the two units after ‘Isha. [آثار السنن تحت ح775]
➋ All of this prayer should be performed two units at a time, and at the end, there is one Witr. See: [صحيح مسلم 1/254 ح736]
