Hadith 15

It is narrated from Sayyiduna ‘Ubādah bin Sāmit (may Allah be pleased with him) that we pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that we would listen and obey whether in ease or in hardship, whether we are pleased or displeased, and that we would not fight against the rulers. Wherever we may be, we will speak the truth and remain steadfast upon it. We will not fear the blame of any blamer regarding Allah.

Jurisprudential Points:
➊ Allegiance (bay‘ah) to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) during his lifetime, and obedience to him in every era until the Day of Resurrection, is obligatory in all circumstances.
➋ In Islam, besides the bay‘ah to the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and to rightly-guided Muslim authorities with correct creed («اولي الامر منكم»), there is no evidence for any third form of bay‘ah.
➌ One must always remain steadfast upon the truth, even if the entire world is against it.
➍ Muslims should not wage war or clash against believing rulers. It should be remembered that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: «کلمة عدل عند إمام جائر» — that is, the best jihad is to speak a word of justice before a tyrannical ruler. [مسند أحمد 5 / 256 ح22207، وسنده حسن لذاته، ابن ماجه : 4012]
➎ Sayyiduna ‘Ubadah ibn al-Samit al-Badri al-Ansari (radi Allahu anhu) was a Companion of great virtue.
➏ While acting upon the Book and the Sunnah, one should pay no heed to people’s objections.
➐ One should remain patient in hardship and express gratitude in times of ease.
➑ The people of faith neither bargain away their faith in times of ease and happiness, nor do they become shaken in times of hardship and sorrow.
