It is narrated from the wife of the Prophet, Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), that I used to sleep in front of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and my feet would be towards his qiblah. Then when the Prophet (peace be upon him) would go into prostration, he would touch my feet with his hand, and I would withdraw my feet. Then when he stood up, I would stretch out my feet again. In those days, there were no lamps in the houses.

Jurisprudential Points: ➊ If the wife of the person praying, or any of his unmarriageable kin (mahramat), is in front of him, the prayer is valid. ➋ Sometimes it happens that in Makkah or Madinah, a person is praying and in front of him, in another row, women are also praying, or a woman passes by. According to the preferred opinion, in such a situation the prayer is valid and there is no need to repeat it. See hadith [البخاري: 510 ومسلم 507] ➌ It is permissible to pray in the dark, and in fact, if this increases humility and submissiveness (khushu‘ and khudu‘), then praying in the dark is better. ➍ If a husband touches his wife without desire (shahwah), his ablution (wudu) is not invalidated. Note that according to the preferred opinion, if he touches with desire, the ablution is invalidated. Hakam ibn ‘Utaybah and Hammad ibn Abi Sulayman said: When he touches, ablution is required. [ابن ابي شيبه 1/46 ح508 وسنده صحيح] Also see [الموطأ رواية يحييٰ 1/43 ح93] ➎ The early period of the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) was a time of extreme poverty and hardship. Later, Allah, the Exalted, opened the treasures of His blessings for them. All praise is due to Allah. ➏ The relationship between husband and wife should be characterized by utmost gentleness, compassion, and love.
