Hadith 130

It is narrated from Basar bin Sa'id (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Zaid bin Khalid al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) sent him to Sayyiduna Abu Juhaim (may Allah be pleased with him) to ask what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had said about one who passes in front of a person praying. So Sayyiduna Abu Juhaim (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "If the one who passes in front of a person praying knew what (sin) is upon him, it would be better for him to stand for forty (?) than to pass in front of the one praying." Abu al-Nadr (may Allah have mercy on him, the narrator) said: I do not know whether he said forty days, or forty months, or forty years.

Takhrij al-Hadith:

Jurisprudential Explanation:
➊ It is forbidden to pass in front of someone performing prayer (without a sutrah).
➋ It is narrated from Nafi‘ that (Sayyiduna) Abdullah ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhu) never passed in front of anyone (performing prayer), nor did he allow anyone to pass in front of him.
➌ Ka‘b al-Ahbar said: If the one passing in front of a person performing prayer knew how much sin is upon him, it would be better for him to sink into the earth than to pass in front of the one praying.
➍ Also see al-Muwatta, previous hadith: 175
➎ All those hadiths in which it is mentioned that if a woman or a donkey, etc., passes in front of a person performing prayer, the prayer is invalidated—these hadiths are all abrogated in light of this hadith in which it is stated that «لا يقطع الصلاة شئ» nothing invalidates the prayer.
◄ Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhu) said: «كان يقال لا يقطع صلاة المسلم شئ» It used to be said that nothing invalidates the prayer of a Muslim.
◄ Umm al-Mu’minin A’ishah (radi Allahu anha) said: Nothing invalidates the prayer except a black dog.
◄ It is narrated from Salim ibn Abdullah ibn Umar (rahimahullah) that (Sayyiduna) Ibn al-Zubayr (radi Allahu anhu) led us in prayer. When we had performed one or two rak‘ahs, a woman passed in front of us, but he (Ibn al-Zubayr radi Allahu anhu) paid no attention to it.
◄ Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhu) said: Nothing invalidates the prayer, and prevent (someone from passing) as much as you are able.
◄ It is narrated from Ibrahim ibn Abdur-Rahman ibn ‘Awf (radi Allahu anhu) that I was performing prayer when a man passed in front of me. I tried to stop him, but he still passed. Then I asked (Sayyiduna) Uthman ibn Affan (radi Allahu anhu), and he said: Nephew! This does not harm you.
It is thus understood that the hadith regarding invalidation of prayer by passing in front is either abrogated, or it means that the reward of the prayer is diminished. For abrogation, see [الاعتبار فى الناسخ والمنسوخ من الآثار للحازمي ص118]
