Hadith 10

And with this chain of narration, it is narrated from Umm al-Mu’minin Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that Sayyiduna Harith bin Hisham (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah! How does revelation come to you? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: “Sometimes it comes like the ringing of a bell, and this is hard upon me. Then when it ends, I remember what was revealed. And sometimes the angel comes to me in the form of a man and speaks to me, and I remember what he says.” Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I have seen revelation descending upon you on a very cold day, and when it ended, sweat would be pouring from your forehead.

Jurisprudential Points:
➊ There are several types of revelation (wahy), for example: direct speech, speech from behind a veil, or through an angel. See, for example: Surah Ash-Shura [51] and [لتمهيد 22/113،]. Some types of revelation are mentioned in the above hadith. The dream of a prophet is also a form of revelation (wahy), as is established by the fact that our master Ibrahim (alayhis salam) intended to sacrifice our master Isma'il (alayhis salam) due to a dream.
➋ Sometimes, a heavy state would overcome the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) during the descent of revelation (wahy).
➌ Exalted is the One who sent His true Messenger and final Prophet in Makkah, upon whom the chain of messengership and prophethood has been completed and terminated.
➍ If an issue is not known, one should ask a scholar.
➎ Angels can take on human form.
