Nawfal bin Masaheq narrated: Amir Umar bin Khattab and Hazrat Uthman bin Hunaif (may Allah be pleased with them both) were speaking in whispers in the mosque. There were some other people sitting there who could not hear their conversation. The two of them kept disagreeing with each other's opinions until Uthman bin Hunaif (may Allah be pleased with him) made Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) angry over something. Amir Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) grabbed a handful of pebbles from the mosque and threw them at Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him)'s face. Blood started to flow from his forehead. When Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saw the blood running down his beard, Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Clean your beard." Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) understood that Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was ashamed of what he had done. Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "O Commander of the Faithful! Do not worry about what you have done to me. By Allah! I will treat those among your subjects over whom you appoint me as governor even more strictly than this." Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) liked his opinion, his words, and his patience, and his respect for him increased even more.
