Abu Salam Al-Aswad says: News reached Umar bin Abdul Aziz (may Allah have mercy on him) that I narrate the hadith about the Hawd (Pond) from Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him). He sent a message to me, so I came riding on a postal horse. Umar bin Abdul Aziz (may Allah have mercy on him) apologized and said, "We did not want to put you in hardship, but I have learned that you narrate the hadith about the Hawd of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) through Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him), and I wished to hear that hadith directly from you." Abu Salam said: I heard from Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him), he was narrating that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "My Hawd (Pond) is as long and wide as the distance from Aden to Amman al-Balqa. Its water is whiter than milk and sweeter than honey. Its cups are as numerous as the stars in the sky. Whoever drinks from it once will never feel thirst again. The first to arrive at the Hawd will be the poor emigrants whose hair is disheveled and clothes are dirty. They do not marry women brought up in luxury, and closed doors are not opened for them." Umar bin Abdul Aziz (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "But I have married Fatimah bint Abdul Malik, who was brought up in luxury, and closed doors have been opened for me. Now, I will not wash my head until it becomes disheveled, and I will not take off my clothes until they become worn out."
