Nawfal bin Masaheq narrated that Umar bin Khattab and Uthman bin Hunaif (may Allah be pleased with them both) were whispering to each other in the mosque, and people were sitting around them but could not hear their conversation. The two of them continued whispering in (Allah’s) house until, at some point, Uthman bin Hunaif (may Allah be pleased with him) angered Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Umar picked up a pebble from the mosque and threw it at Uthman’s face, injuring him, and blood started to flow from his forehead. When Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saw blood flowing abundantly on his beard, he said, “Clean the blood.” Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) understood that Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) regretted what he had done. So he said, “O Commander of the Faithful! I will treat anyone from your subjects whom you appoint me over even more strictly than this.” Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) liked his opinion and his patience, and his esteem for him increased even more.
