Trials and punishments upon the Ummah explained
Hadith 841
أَخْبَرَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى، نا يَحْيَى بْنُ الْمُتَوَكِّلِ، عَنْ يَعْقُوبَ بْنِ سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ((يُوشِكَ أَنْ تَظْهَرَ فِتْنَةٌ لَا يُنَجِّي إِلَّا اللَّهُ أَوْ مَنْ دَعَا بِدُعَاءٍ كَدُعَاءِ الْغَرْقَى)) .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace be upon him) said: "A time is near when a trial will appear, none will be saved except Allah, or the one who supplicates with a supplication like that of a drowning person."
Hadith 842
أَخْبَرَنَا مُعَاوِيَةُ، نا دَاوُدُ بْنُ أَبِي هِنْدَ، عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ بَنِي قَيْسٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ((يَأْتِي عَلَى النَّاسِ زَمَانٌ يُخَيَّرُ الرَّجُلُ بَيْنَ الْعَجْزِ وَالْفُجُورِ)) ، قَالَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ: فَإِنْ أَدْرَكْتَ ذَلِكَ فَاخْتَرِ الْعَجْزَ عَلَى الْفُجُورِ.
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace be upon him) said: "A time will come upon the people when a man will be given a choice between incapacity and wickedness."
Hadith 843
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ الْحَفَرِيُّ، قَالَ: زَعَمَ سَعْدُ بْنُ طَارِقٍ، وَهُوَ أَبُو مَالِكٍ الْأَشْجَعِيُّ، عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: ((لَيْسَ عَلَى هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ عَذَابٌ، إِنَّمَا عَذَابُهَا بِأَيْدِيهِمْ)) ، فَقِيلَ: وَكَيْفَ يَكُونَ عَذَابُهَا بِأَيْدِيهِمْ؟، فَقَالَ: ((أَلَيْسَ صَفِّينُ كَانَ عَذَابًا؟ أَلَيْسَ النَّهْرَوَانُ كَانَ عَذَابًا؟ أَلَيْسَ الْجَمَلُ كَانَ عَذَابًا؟)) قُلْتُ لِأَبِي دَاوُدَ: مَنْ ذَكَرَهُ عَنْ سَعْدٍ؟ قَالَ: يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي زَائِدَةَ.
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: There is no punishment upon this Ummah; its punishment is in its own hands. It was asked of him, "How can its punishment be in its own hands?" He replied: "Was not the Battle of Siffin a punishment? Was not the Battle of Nahrawan a punishment? Was not the Battle of Jamal a punishment?" The narrator stated: I said to Abu Dawud (may Allah have mercy on him): Who narrated it from Sa'd? He said: Yahya bin Abi Zaidah did.
