Description of the Greatest Name (Ism al-Azam)
Hadith 834
قَالَ إِسْحَاقُ ذُكِرَ لَنَا عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي زِيَادٍ الْقِدَاحِ الْمَكِّيِّ، عَنْ شَهْرِ بْنِ حَوْشَبٍ، عَنْ أَسْمَاءَ بِنْتِ يَزِيدَ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: " اسْمُ اللَّهُ الْأَعْظَمُ فِي هَاتَيْنِ الْآيَتَيْنِ: ﴿وَإِلَهُكُمْ إِلَهٌ وَاحِدٌ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الرَّحْمَنُ الرَّحِيمُ﴾ [البقرة: 163] وَأَوَّلِ آلَ عِمْرَانَ: ﴿الم اللَّهُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ﴾ [آل عمران:1- 2] ".
Sayyida Asma bint Yazid (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: "The Greatest Name of Allah is in these two verses «وإلهكم إله واحد لا إله إلا هو الرحمن الرحيم» and in the beginning verse of Surah Al-Imran."
Hadith 835
أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ إِدْرِيسَ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ مَالِكَ بْنَ مِغْوَلٍ، يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ بُرَيْدَةَ قَالَ: خَرَجَ بُرَيْدَةُ عِشَاءً فَلَقِيَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَخَذَ بِيَدِهِ، فَأَدْخَلَهُ الْمَسْجِدَ وَإِذَا بِرَجُلٍ يَدْعُو وَهُوَ يَقُولُ: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ بِأَنِّي أَشْهَدُ أَنَّكَ حَيُّ أَنْتَ اللَّهُ الْوَاحِدُ الْأَحَدُ الصَّمَدُ الَّذِي لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَكَ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ. فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ، لَقَدْ دَعَا اللَّهَ بِاسْمِهِ الْأَعْظَمِ الَّذِي إِذَا دُعِيَ بِهِ أَجَابَ، وَإِذَا سُئِلَ بِهِ أَعْطَى)).
Abdullah bin Buraidah narrated: Buraidah (may Allah be pleased with him) went out at the time of ‘Isha and met the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took his hand and brought him into the mosque, where a man was supplicating with these words: “O Allah! I ask You, I bear witness that You are Allah, the One, the Only, the Self-Sufficient, Who neither begets nor is begotten, and there is none equal to Him.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “By Him in Whose hand is my soul! He has supplicated to Allah with His Greatest Name; when He is supplicated with it, He responds, and when He is asked with it, He gives.”
