Charity on behalf of the deceased benefits the deceased
Hadith 743
اَخْبَرَنَا رَوْحُ بْنُ عُبَادَةَ، عَنْ زَکَرِیَّا بْنِ اِسْحَاقَ الْمَکِّیِّ، یَنْفَعُهَا اِنْ اَتَصَدَّقُ عَنْهَا؟ فَقَالَ: نَعَمْ۔ قَالَ: فَاِنَّ لِیْ مَخْرَفَةٌ، فَاُشْهِدُ اَنِّیْ تَصَدَّقْتُ بِهَا عَنْهَا۔ قَالَ رَوْحٌ: وَالْمَخْرَفَةَ: النَّخْلُ.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): His mother had passed away, if he gives charity on her behalf, will it benefit her? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes." He said: I have a date orchard, I make you a witness that I have given it in charity on her behalf. Ruh says: The meaning of «مخرفة» is a date orchard.
