Hunger and thirst in the early days of Islam
Hadith 718
أَخْبَرَنَا النَّضْرُ بْنُ شُمَيْلٍ، نا شُعْبَةُ، نا دَاوُدُ بْنُ فَرَاهِيجَ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ: ((مَا كَانَ لَنَا طَعَامٌ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَّا الْأسْوَدَانِ التَّمْرُ وَالْمَاءُ)) .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: In the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), only two things—dates and water—were our food.
Hadith 719
أَخْبَرَنَا وَهْبُ بْنُ جَرِيرٍ، نا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ دَاوُدَ بْنَ فَرَاهِيجَ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ، يَقُولُ مِثْلَهُ سَوَاءً.
It is narrated from Dawud bin Farahij that he heard Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrate in this manner.
Hadith 720
أَخْبَرَنَا جَرِيرٌ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ: " كُنْتُ فِي أَصْحَابِ الصُّفَّةِ، فَبَعَثَ إِلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِتَمْرِ عَجْوَةٍ، فَجَعَلْنَا نَأْكُلُ السِّنِينَ مِنَ الْجُوعِ، وَجَعَلَ أَصْحَابُنَا إِذَا قَرَنَ أَحَدُهُمْ قَالَ لِصَاحِبِهِ: إِنِّي قَرَنْتُ فَاقْرِنُوا ".
Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I was among the people of Suffah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Ajwa dates to us, and they were placed before us. Due to hunger, we began to eat two dates at a time. When any one of us combined two dates and ate them, he would say to his companion: I have combined two dates, so you also combine (yours).
