Consequence of arrogance
Hadith 694
أَخْبَرَنَا النَّضْرُ، نا شُعْبَةُ، نا مُحَمَّدٌ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: بَيْنَمَا رَجُلٌ يَمْشِي فِي حُلَّةٍ مُرَجِّلَ جُمَّتِهِ يُعْجِبُهُ نَفْسُهُ، إِذْ خُسِفَتْ بِهِ الْأَرْضُ فَهُوَ يَتَجَلْجَلُ فِيهَا إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ.
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “(Among the Children of Israel) there was a man who, wearing a suit and combing his hair in locks, was walking arrogantly when he was made to sink into the earth, and he will continue to sink in it until the Day of Resurrection.”
Hadith 695
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، نا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِثْلَهُ سَوَاءً.
From another chain of narration, a similar hadith is reported from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as the previous one.
Hadith 696
أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، نا مَعْمَرٌ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ مَوْلَى بَنِي جُمَحٍ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ، يَقُولُ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: بَيْنَمَا رَجُلٌ يَمْشِي، فَذَكَرَ مِثْلَهُ.
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A man was walking." Then he mentioned as in the previous hadith.
Hadith 697
أَخْبَرَنَا النَّضْرُ، نا عَوْفٌ، عَنْ خِلَاسٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ((بَيْنَمَا شَابٌّ مِمَّنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ يَمْشِي فِي حُلَّةٍ مُخْتَالَا فَخُورًا ابْتَلَعَتْهُ الْأَرْضُ فَهُوَ يَتَجَلْجَلُ فِيهَا إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ أَنْ تَقُومَ السَّاعَةُ)) .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: "Among the people before you (the Children of Israel), there was a young man who, wearing a pair of garments, was walking arrogantly in pride, when the earth swallowed him up, and he will continue to sink in it until the Day of Resurrection."
