Sayyida Umm Waraqah bint Abdullah bin Harith Ansariyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: She had memorized the Qur'an. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was about to go for the Battle of Badr, she said to him: "Do you permit me to go with you? I will treat and nurse your wounded and sick, perhaps Allah will grant me martyrdom." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah has written martyrdom for you." Thus, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to call her 'the martyr' and he ordered her to lead her household in prayer. She had a mu'adhdhin (caller to prayer), and she continued to lead her household in prayer until her slave girl and her slave strangled her. She had told both of them that after her death they would be free. Both of them killed her during the caliphate of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). It became well known that Umm Waraqah had been killed, and that her slave and slave girl had killed her. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) announced among the people: "Umm Waraqah's slave girl and her slave strangled her and killed her, and both have fled." They were brought and crucified, and they were the first to be executed in Madinah. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke the truth. He used to say: 'Come with us, we will meet the martyr.'"
