A woman traveling without a mahram
Hadith 349
اَخْبَرَنَا سُفْیَانُ، عَنْ عَمْرٍو، اَنَّهٗ سَمِعَ اَبَا مَعْبَدٍ یَقُوْلُ: سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ یَقُوْلُ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُوْلَ اللّٰهِ صَلَّی اللّٰهُ عَلَیْهِ وَسَلَّمَ یَخْطِبُ، یَقُوْلُ: اَلَا لَا یَخْلُوَنَّ رَجُلٌ بِاِمْرَأَةٍ (اِلَّا وَمَعَهَا) ذُوْمَحْرَمٍ، وَلَا تُسَافِرُ اِمْرَأَةٌ اِلَّا وَمَعَهَا ذُوْ مَحْرَمٍ، قَالَ: فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ: اِنِّیْ اکْتُتِبْتُ فِیْ غَزْوَۃِ کَذَا وَکَذَا، وَانْطَلَقَتْ اِمْرَأَتِیْ حَاجَّةً، قَالَ: فَانْطَلِقْ فَاحْجُجْ مَعَ اِمْرَأَتِكَ.
Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: “Listen! No man should sit in seclusion with a woman except that there is a mahram relative with her, and no woman should travel except that there is a mahram relative with her.” A man said: O Messenger of Allah! My name has been written for such-and-such battle, while my wife is going for Hajj. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Go and perform Hajj with your wife.”
Hadith 350
اَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَکْرٍ، اَنَا ابْنُ جُرَیْجٍ، اَخْبَرَنِی عَمْرُو بْنُ دِیْنَارٍ، اَنَّهٗ سَمِعَ اَبَا مَعْبَدٍ، یُخْبِرُ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ اَنَّہٗ قَالَ: لَا تُسَافِرُ اِمْرَأَةٌ اِلَّا وَمَعَهَا ذُوْ مَحْرَمٍ۔ فَقَالَ عَمْرٌو فِیْ حَدِیْثِهٖ عَنْ اَبِیْ مَعْبَدٍ، قَالَ: وَقَالَ رَجُلٌ: یَا رَسُوْلَ اللّٰهِ: اِنِّیْ اُکْتُتِبْتُ فِیْ غَزْوَةِ کَذَآ وَکَذَا، وَخَرَجَتْ اِمْرَأَتِیْ حَاجَّةً، قَالَ: اذْهَبْ فَحَجِّ مَعَهَا.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No woman should travel unless she is accompanied by a mahram relative." In his narration, Amr narrated from Abu Ma'bad that a man said: O Messenger of Allah! My name has been registered for such-and-such battle, while my wife is going for Hajj. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go, perform Hajj with her."
