Reward for spending charity on relatives
Hadith 290
أَخْبَرَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ آدَمَ، عَنْ حَفْصِ بْنِ غِيَاثٍ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ قَالَتْ: " جَاءَتْ زَيْنَبُ امْرَأَةُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ: " إِنَّ زَوْجِي فَقِيرٌ، وَإِنَّ بَنِي أَخٍ لِي أَيْتَامٌ فِي حِجْرِي، وَأَنَا مُنْفِقَةٌ عَلَيْهِمْ هَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا، وَعَلَى كُلِّ حَالٍ فَهَلْ لِي أَجْرٌ فِيمَا أَنْفَقْتُ عَلَيْهِمْ؟ فَقَالَ: ((نَعَمْ)) وَكَانَتْ صَنَاعَ الْيَدَيْنِ ".
Lady Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us to give charity, so Abdullah (bin Mas'ud’s, may Allah be pleased with him) wife Zainab (may Allah be pleased with her) came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with charity and said: O Messenger of Allah! Abdullah has little wealth and I have orphaned nephews, so if I spend on them from charity, will it suffice on my behalf, while I spend on them from such and such sources, and in every situation (I spend on them)? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Yes.” The narrator stated, she was a craftswoman.
Hadith 291
أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، نا مَعْمَرٌ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ: أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، إِنَّ بَنِي أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ فِي حِجْرِي، وَلَيْسَ لَهُمْ شَيْءٌ إِلَّا مَا أَنْفَقْتُ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَسْتُ بِتَارِكِيهِمْ كَذَا وَكَذَا أَفَلِي أَجْرٌ إِنْ أَنْفَقْتُ عَلَيْهِمْ؟ فَقَالَ: ((نَعَمْ، .
It is narrated from Sayyida Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: O Messenger of Allah! The children of Abu Salamah are under my care (guardianship), is it sufficient for me to spend on them from charity, and I do not let any opportunity to spend on them slip by? So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes."
Hadith 292
أَخْبَرَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ آدَمَ، نا عَبْدُ الرَّحِيمِ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، عَنِ الْمُجَالِدِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ، عَنْ زَيْنَبَ الثَّقَفِيَّةِ قَالَتْ: كُنْتُ جَمَعْتُ مُويلَا لِي فَقُلْتُ لَأَضَعَنَّهُ فِي أَزْكَى مَوْضِعٍ عِنْدِي، فَقُلْتُ فِي نَفْسِي: لَوْ تَصَدَّقْتُ بِهِ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ فِي بَعْضِ سَرَايَا رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الَّتِي يَبْعَثُهَا، أَوْ أَشْتَرِي بِهِ نَسَمَةً مُسْلِمَةً فَأَعْتِقُهَا، أَوْ تَصَدَّقْتُ بِهِ عَلَى الْمَسَاكِينِ، أَوْ تَصَدَّقْتُ بِهِ عَلَى زَوْجٍ مَجْهُودٍ وَبَنِي أَخٍ يَتَامَى فِي حِجْرِي، فَأَتَيْتُ عَائِشَةَ أَسْأَلُهَا، عَنْ ذَلِكَ، فَدَخَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ: يَا عَائِشَةُ: ((مَنْ هَذِهِ؟)) قَالَتِ امْرَأَةُ ابْنِ أُمِّ عَبْدٍ. قَالَ: ((فَمَا جَاءَ بِهَا)) فَذَكَرَتْ عَائِشَةُ لَهُ ذَلِكَ. فَقَالَ: لِتَرُدُّهُ عَلَى زَوْجِهَا الْمَجْهُودِ وَبَنِي أَخِيهَا الْيَتَامَى يَكُنْ لَهَا أَجْرُهَا مَرَّتَيْنِ ".
Zainab Thaqafiyyah narrated: I used to save my wealth, so I said: I will keep it in the best place with me. I said in my heart: If I spend it in the way of Allah on any army of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) that you send, or if I buy a Muslim slave girl and set her free, or give it in charity to the poor, or give it in charity to my husband who has little wealth, or give it in charity to my orphan nephews under my care. So I came to Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) to ask her about this. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came and said: "Aisha! Who is this?" She replied: The wife of Ibn Umm Abd. He said: "Why has she come?" Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) mentioned this to him, so the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "She should spend it on her husband who has little wealth and on her orphan nephews under her care; for her there will be double reward."
Hadith 293
أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدَةُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، نا هِشَامُ بْنُ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ: كَانَتْ زَيْنَبُ امْرَأَةِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ صَنَاعَ الْيَدَيْنِ تَصْنَعُ الشَّيْءَ ثُمَّ تَبِيعُهُ، وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لِعَبْدِ اللَّهِ مَالٌ وَلَا لِوَلَدِهِ فَقَالَتِ امْرَأَتُهُ: سَتَعْلَمُونَ أَنْ أَتَصَدَّقَ، فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ: مَا أُحِبُّ إِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَكِ أَجْرٌ فِيمَا تُنْفِقِينَ أَنْ تَفْعَلِيَ، فَأَتَتْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَصَّتْ عَلَيْهِ الْقِصَّةَ، فَقَالَ: ((أَنْفِقِي عَلَيْهِمْ فَلَكِ أَجْرٌ فِيمَا أَنْفَقْتِ عَلَيْهِمْ)).
Urwah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated: The wife of Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) was skilled; she used to make things and then sell them. Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) and his children did not have wealth. His wife said to him: "You have distracted me from giving charity." So Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "If there is no reward for you in (spending) on us, then I do not like that you do this." So she went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and related the whole incident to him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You will have a reward for whatever you spend on them, so spend on them."
Hadith 294
أَخْبَرَنَا عِيسَى بْنُ يُونُسَ، نا زَكَرِيَّا بْنُ أَبِي زَائِدَةَ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ، أَنَّ زَيْنَبَ امْرَأَةَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ سَأَلَتْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنِ الصَّدَقَةِ عَلَى الْأَقَارِبِ، فَقَالَ: ((الصَّدَقَةُ عَلَى الْأَقَارِبِ تُضَاعَفُ عَلَى غَيْرِ الْأَقَارِبِ مَرَّتَيْنِ)).
It is narrated from Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) that the wife of Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), Zainab (may Allah be pleased with her), asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about the issue of giving charity to relatives. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Giving charity to relatives earns double the reward compared to giving charity to non-relatives."
Hadith 295
أَخْبَرَنَا جَرِيرٌ، عَنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ قَالَ: جَاءَتِ امْرَأَةُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَتْ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، إِنَّ لِي حُلِيًّا، وَإِنَّ فِي حِجْرِي بَنِي أَخٍ أَيْتَامًا أَفَأَجْعَلُ زَكْوَةَ حُلِيِّ فِيهِمْ؟ فَقَالَ: ((نَعَمْ)).
Ibrahim (Nakhai, may Allah have mercy on him) narrated: The wife of Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! I have jewelry and my orphan nephews are under my care, so can I spend the zakat of my jewelry on them? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes."
Hadith 296
أَخْبَرَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ آدَمَ، نا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ مُهَلْهَلٍ، عَنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ قَالَ: جَاءَتِ امْرَأَةُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَتْ: إِنَّ فِي حِجْرِي بَنِي أَخٍ لِي أَوْ بَنِي أَخٍ لِعَبْدِ اللَّهِ أَفَأَجْعَلُ زَكْوَةَ مَالِي فِيهِمْ؟ فَقَالَ: ((نَعَمْ)) قَالَ الْمُفَضَّلُ: شَكَّ الْمُغِيرَةُ فِي بَنِي أَخِيهَا أَوْ بَنِي أَخِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ.
Ibrahim (Nakhai, may Allah have mercy on him) narrated: The wife of Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: The nephews of mine or of Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with her) are under my care; can I spend my zakat on them from my wealth? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes."
Hadith 297
أَخْبَرَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ آدَمَ، نا إِسْرَائِيلُ، عَنْ مُغِيرَةَ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ قَالَ: جَاءَتِ امْرَأَةُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَتْ: إِنَّهُ مُخِفٌّ ذُو أَكْلٍ لِعَبْدِ اللَّهِ، أَفَيُجْزِئُنِي أَنْ أَجْعَلَ صَدَقَةَ مَالِي فِيهِمْ؟ فَقَالَ: ((نَعَمْ)).
Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated: The wife of Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: The nephews of Abdullah are under my care. If I spend charity from my wealth on them, will that suffice for me? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes."
